The one gotcha

A contoured mat cannot be rolled over. If they sit and stand at the same spot in a wheeled chair, a Topo will end up against the wall within a fortnight and a flat mat is the better gift. The full comparison.

What to skip at this budget

  • Cheap monitor arms. A gas-spring arm that droops in month four is worse than the stand it replaced. Arms are worth buying well or not at all.
  • Single-surface laptop risers. They put the keyboard at screen height, which is the posture problem, not the fix.
  • Desk exercise gadgets. Under-desk pedals and mini steppers are bought enthusiastically and used twice.
  • Cable management kits. Useful, genuinely, and about as exciting to unwrap as a pack of screws. Include one with a real gift instead — here is the list.
