Two philosophies

The Topo assumes standing still is the problem. So it is deliberately not flat: mounds, varying terrain and a calf-stretch edge, designed so your feet keep finding somewhere different to go. Comfort comes from movement rather than from padding.

The CumulusPRO assumes the hard floor is the problem. So it is 3/4" of polyurethane cushioning core, flat and even, with a guarantee it will not lose support over time. Comfort comes from the surface.

Both diagnoses are correct for different people, which is why both products exist.

The chair test

One question decides this

Do you sit and stand at the same spot? If yes, buy flat. A contoured mat cannot be rolled over, so every transition becomes a small act of furniture moving, and within a fortnight the mat lives against the wall. That is not a criticism of the Topo — it is a mismatch between a product and a workflow.

If you have a perch stool rather than a rolling chair, the test does not apply — you lift a perch out of the way rather than rolling it, and the Topo is back in play.

The verdict

Buy the Topo if you stand for long stretches, you stand barefoot or in soft shoes, and nothing needs to roll across the floor. The 16-year warranty and published materials statement are unusual, and the calf shelf is genuinely useful during a long call.

Buy the CumulusPRO if you alternate frequently, you share the desk, or the price gap matters. A lifetime guarantee on the core is the strongest durability claim in the category, and flat is simply more practical in a real room.

Buy the Topo Mini if the full Topo's 26.25" of depth will not fit — same foam, same 16-year warranty, 25.2" x 19.2" and 4 lb.

Can you put a chair on a Topo?

No. The terrain is the whole design, and it means a rolling chair cannot cross it. This is the single most common reason people end up returning one.
